Foreword
by Peter Hook (Joy Division, New Order)
When the internet became HUGE and our record sales
became small, I really started to miss vinyl records.
I had been prepared: Tapes, 8-track cartridges,
cassettes, CDs, DAT, MiniDiscs, MP3s… everything
started to disappear.

The sleeve notes on the records, which were so important
to me as a kid were now unreadable. Whenever I com-
plained, which was often, I was told: „We can get some
vinyl records from Germany. They still make them there!“
I was delighted to see my creations back in their
warm, black, crackly environment. I got a record player
for Christmas! It was like being re-born. Like being a child
again. Every time I put original vinyl on my heart lights up.
It is a deeply personal, almost religious experience.
Thank you Germany. Thank you, Kai Schäfer.

Worldrecords
The greatest albums in music history highlighted:
on record players that partly became legendary too.

worldrecords is meant to be a tribute to analog acoustic art,
an homage to the warmest, perhaps most sensitive type of
sound carrier. In a way ‐ and that makes the photo series
so special ‐ it is also a private time machine to the spectator:
music as an impulse to remember bits and pieces of one’s
personal history, a release of former thoughts and feelings.
The soundtrack of your life.

From a formal point of view, the precise approach down to the last detail finds its ideal expression in large format. Each groove, each label notice, each tone arm component is oversized and thus nearly tangible. The special light Kai has developed for worldrecords contributes a great deal to make these effects real.
